Corporate Social Investment (CSI) is a top priority to the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ), emphasising the importance of actively supporting local communities. In honour of Mandela Month, the ELIDZ undertook a significant initiative, visiting two vital centres, the Masizakhe Child and Youth Care Centre in Mdantsane and the Sivenathi Special Care Centre in Fort Beaufort. These visits highlight our dedication to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.
These centres share a common purpose and a steadfast dedication to fostering growth, resilience, and compassion. Their values resonate deeply with the legacy of Nelson Mandela, who championed equality, justice, and empathy. By recognising this shared mission, the ELIDZ demonstrated unwavering commitment to community well-being.
At the Masizakhe Child and Youth Care Centre, the ELIDZ contributed essential items such as groceries, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and even a heavy-duty washing machine. In addition to these material donations, the ELIDZ employees actively participated in painting the centre and engaging in friendly competitions with the children, further their support with personal involvement and interaction. This special donation, amounting to over R200,000.00 combined, clearly demonstrates the ELIDZ’s strong sense of responsibility in supporting and contributing to the cause.
In collaboration with partners Boratech Energy Group and Junoscan Construction, the ELIDZ facilitated essential refurbishments and maintenance at the centre, addressing roof leaks, plumbing issues, and electrical faults.
During the event, CSI Chairperson, Ms Nomsa Makhoba emphasised the broader purpose of the ELIDZ CSI Programme:
“Today, we reaffirm our commitment to invest our time and resources in the well-being of our young children. Every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment where they can study, dream and pursue their aspirations. The future lies in the hands of the youth, and it is our responsibility to assist them in every way possible.”
Ms Makhoba praised the ELIDZ employees for their dedicated support and encouraged them to persist in their efforts to positively impact the community. This collaborative effort not only fostered a supportive environment, but also demonstrated a powerful image of solidarity and shared purpose.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude for the collective efforts of everyone involved, Mr Luyanda Lusizi, Manager of the Masizakhe Child and Youth Care Centre, said:
“Thank you for the tremendous work you have done. We genuinely appreciate your efforts, which brings smiles to our children’s faces. Given the challenges our society faces, it is up to us to make a positive difference in these children’s lives.”
Mr Lusizi urged for ongoing collaboration, stating, “Let us continue to work together by nurturing and investing in our children’s growth and success.”
The impact of ELIDZ extended beyond Masizakhe to the Sivenathi Special Care Centre, renowned for its support of individuals with special needs. In addition to donating essential items similar to those provided to Masizakhe, ITEC, a technical partner of ELIDZ, generously contributed a desktop computer and printer to further empower and enhance the centre’s capabilities.
Mr Elton Bantam, Councillor for Community Services in Raymond Mhlaba Municipality, warmly welcomed the ELIDZ team and stating:
“Thank you, ELIDZ, for your generous contribution. We are honoured to have you and ITEC here. When our community reached out, you did not hesitate to assist, and we are grateful that you chose Sivenathi. Keep up the good work in supporting our communities. We deeply appreciate all that you do for our children.”
Ward Councillor Ms Zikhona Lento, expressed her admiration, stating:
“We are grateful your support and hope to see you again next year. Please continue your efforts to ensure our children live in a healthy, and supportive environment.”
The Secretary of the centre, Ms Tembela Ndzandze, acknowledged the challenges facing the centre, and lacked words to fully convey her appreciation. On behalf of the centre, she extended her heartfelt gratitude to the ELIDZ and ITEC.
Both initiatives stand as a testament to the ELIDZ’s commitment to community development and truly embody the spirit of Nelson Mandela Month – a time characterised by hard work, joy, and, most importantly, making a significant impact on society. The ELIDZ handovers to Masizakhe Children’s Home and Sivenathi Special Care Centre exemplify how corporate entities can meaningfully impact communities through collaboration, dedication, and a genuine desire to uplift those they serve.
