Corporate Social Investment
The East London IDZ not only aims to fulfill the mandate of facilitating economic growth in the region through the creation of employment, but also provides for some of the social needs in the local community. This year the following sponsored activities have taken place.
East London IDZ Running Challenge
2007 is the second year that the Running Challenge has successfully been hosted by the East London IDZ with more than double the number of participants that entered last year’s event. The event is held to promote running in the West Bank area and this year the East London IDZ’s involvement has enabled the establishment of the West Bank’s first running club.
Mother’s Day
This year, East London IDZ recognised Mother’s Day by supporting a fundraising tea in aid of the destitute mothers and babies of the Salem Baby Care Centre.
East London IDZ learnership programme
In partnership with the Eastern Cape’s Office of the Premier, and the Buffalo City Public FET College, the East London IDZ is hosting 72 learners placed at factories within the East London IDZ to complete the practical component of their training. The learners spend approximately 60% of the year in one of the factories in the Automotive Supplier Park in the East London IDZ. These learnerships enable learners to develop the necessary experience and skills to become more employable, as well as provide a pool of available skills for manufacturing companies.
Women’s Day
The women staff at the East London IDZ treated the women of Living Waters, a safe house for abused women, to lunch at Cape to Cairo as part of Women’s Day celebrations.
